Why Your Mouth Deserves More Attention
If you ignore this, please don't ever speak to me again.
I remember a few years ago I went for my routine bi-annual dental cleaning. I always like a good dental cleanse, it makes you feel so fresh and so clean!
I thought everything had gone marvellously, but after the cleaning my dentist dropped a bombshell: I had early-stage periodontitis — something she said was an irreversible condition. Worse yet, she told me I had been dealing with gingivitis for quite some time, something she had neglected to mention before!
I just stood there staring at her not knowing how to reply. Besides, I never liked irreversibility…
I had unknowingly been neglecting my oral health, assuming my standard routine was enough. I started asking her questions about my condition and what I can do — I took her recommendations to heart and started the process.
I switched to a more diligent oral care routine — and practiced it religiously.
BRUSH IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT – I upgraded to Curaprox toothbrushes and Enzycal toothpaste, ensuring I wasn’t using overly abrasive tools that could harm my gums.
BRUSH AWAY – I began using interdental brushes daily to remove remnants from places my toothbrush couldn’t reach. You don’t want any leftovers stuck in there festering on your gums! There are different sizes of brushes, make sure you don’t use that’s too big or too small. Don’t worry — after a few tries you will find what’s just right.
FLOSS LIKE A BOSS – No excuses, no skipping days. I treated flossing as non-negotiable. Every night, no matter where I was — I flossed. You’d be amazed what you’ll find if you floss every night 👀
FINAL TOUCHES – Before the dental hygiene routine was finalised, you just gargle some high-class mouthwash and spit it out. Boom, you’re done! 😁
A few months of doing this and it was once again time for my dental cleanse. I waited patiently for her to finish before I started to bombard her with questions.
The results spoke for themselves — no more signs of gingivitis, and my gums were as healthy as ever. The supposed "irreversible" condition? No longer a concern.
I shot back, “But you told me it was irreversible..” She replied, “Sometimes if you get it early, you can reverse it.”
Ok then… ✅ 🥲
Why won’t you?
I see so many people today ignoring the basics. They say they want a lot from their lives but can’t even do this? There is no excuse!
Bad oral health starts slowly; bleeding and inflamed gums, occasional sensitivity, bad breath — but later they snowball into serious, sometimes irreversible, consequences.
And it doesn’t stop with your teeth or your mouth; your oral health is directly linked to your overall well-being.
Yet, people still ignore it. They spend thousands on skincare, fitness, and diets while disregarding the foundation of health—basic hygiene. How can everything else start to go right if you neglect the fundamentals?
If your body is a temple, your mouth is the gateway.
The lesson? Take control of the small, essential habits first. Flossing, brushing, and routine checkups might not feel like game-changers in the moment, but they are.
If you can commit to these basics, imagine what else you can master in your self-care journey.
Self-care isn’t just about indulgence; it’s about discipline in the small things that compound to bigger things along the way. Ask your dental hygienist what’s best for you, and start at once!
